Where to start? I went into this book pretty blind other than knowing it has superheroes or something like that... and as Rook would say, “Rude.” This book sits at 827 pages, and I was not bored, not once, not even a little. Rook and Mara were my favorite characters, and Raven is just a total badass. Every character has so much depth and the plot with the banter and all the fights had me wishing my eyeballs could read faster. “Atlas the world’s beloved hero ended the age of villains but what happens when heroes get bored?” It has found family, slowburn romance and sassy, sarcastic characters that made me laugh throughout the entire book. I can’t wait for book 2!

Some books entertain you. Others quietly move into your head and refuse to leave. After the Applause was that kind of book for me. At first, I expected an action-packed superhero story. And while the action is there, that’s not what made me fall in love with it. It’s a story about people—flawed, funny, broken, hopeful people—trying to find their place in a world that has already decided who they should be. Rook absolutely stole the show for me. He’s sarcastic, stubborn, self-deprecating, and somehow still incredibly compassionate. The more I learned about him, the more I wanted to protect him... while simultaneously laughing at half the things that came out of his mouth. And the relationships? They feel genuine. They breathe. Every member of the cast has a purpose, and I found myself caring about all of them. What surprised me most is that this isn’t really a story about superpowers. It’s about responsibility, found family, identity, sacrifice, and what happens when the people we’re taught to admire aren’t as heroic as they seem. I laughed more than I expected. I got attached to people I didn’t expect. There were moments that genuinely made me stop reading just so I could sit there and think about what I’d learned. Those are the stories I remember long after I’ve closed the book. This book understands that the strongest stories aren’t built on abilities—they’re built on relationships. On trust. On grief. On hope. On the quiet moments between the big ones. By the end, I wasn’t thinking about who had the coolest power. I was thinking about who these people were... and hoping I’d get to spend more time with them. That’s probably the highest compliment I can give a book.

What can I say about this book without getting too excited? Ummm, yea, not going to happen. This book is such an exciting read; action, drama, found family, love, finding your purpose, it has so many different aspects of life that are relatable. Superheroes aren’t always the good guys, which you’ll come to find out on your own as you read After the Applause. In a dystopian world, the ones that were hidden or caged are stepping up to help, with Rook front and center. This book is non-stop in the best way possible. The one liners and sarcasm throughout the book are hilarious and I can’t wait to read it again!

Oh my God I’m so mad with Adrian right now because book two is not done. This book is addicting. I couldn’t hardly put it down, but it took me forever to read because I kept having to go back and reread to make sure I understood the plot line—and then to just leave it on such a cliffhanger!
